Garnelen mit Ketchup – 茄汁大虾

Ketchup - a Chinese word that most people know but don't know is Chinese. 番茄 (pronounced fan ke) is the Chinese word for tomato. And 汁 'chap' means sauce. If you pronounce 'chup' in English, you have 'chap'. Together we have 'ketchup'. It's more of a southern Chinese term.

Shrimp with ketchup – or ketchup shrimp? In Chinese it is definitely ketchup shrimp. But the shrimp portion is much larger. So shrimp with ketchup after all?

The play on words alone shows the discrepancy between German and Chinese. And so does the dish itself. If you google images of 'prawns with ketchup' you will find something completely different than if you search for '番茄酱大虾' or '茄汁大虾'.

Let's get to our dish. A very simple dish. The direction is set. It should taste like ketchup. Ginger, spring onions and garlic give the dish a more delicate note.
